What is AJANT?
Australian Japanese Association of the Northern Territory Incorporated (AJANT) is a not-for-profit organisation, and was formed in 1989. Our primary goal is to foster greater understanding and friendship between Australian and Japanese people.
What do we do?
- Hold events and social get-togethers to promote Japanese culture and friendship. AJANT is very proud of the events we have held in the past such as Children’s Day, Japanese Film Festival and Bunko No Hi.
- Act as a point of contact for new arrivals to the Northern Territory by providing support and friendship to lessen the impact of loneliness and hardship of settling into a new environment.
- Provide opportunities for people to learn more about Japan, Japanese culture and language through friendship.
- Help and be a source of support and information for Japanese tourists visiting the Northern Territory.
- Act as an official point of contact between the Japanese Embassy and the Consulate of Japan for the Northern Territory community.

The 30th Anniversary
We had The 30th anniversary social picnic at Mindil beach, Darwin on Friday 21st June 2019.

This year we are celebrating the 30th year anniversary of AJANT which was created in 1989 from a small and enthusiastic group of people living in Darwin who were keen to share Japanese culture and events with the wider Darwin community. Over the years AJANT has flourished and grown and is still going strong. We are proud to be able to host events and share Japanese culture within Darwin.
We would like to thank you all especially: the members and supporters, who keep us going and motivated and inspired to bring more events each year. A huge thank you to all the committee members who give up their free time and work hard as they are and have been passionate and enthusiastic to share Japanese culture.
We are also grateful to the present and previous NT governments, the City of Darwin, Mr. James Paspaley, The Consulate General of Japan in Sydney, The Japan foundation Sydney, ABC radio, NT News and all the other volunteers who have either funded or assisted and supported us greatly over the years.
May AJANT continue to grow and flourish over the years, and may everyone here continue to enjoy what we present.
